QSINET Requirements
The following specifies the components that are needed to successfully utilize QSINET. You may click on a specific item or use your scroll bar to read through all the topics.
Any IBM compatible personal computer running Windows with Netscape Navigator 3.0 (or 2.0) or Microsoft Explorer 3.0 can access QSINET. However, the best utilization of QSINET will be achieved with the following minimum PC specifications:
Regardless of how fast your PC is, connecting to the Internet can be constrained by the operating speed of your modem. Because of QSINET's graphical user interface, QSI highly recommends a 28.8 baud modem or faster. Also, a dedicated modem phone line should be acquired from your telecommunications carrier.
You will need a printer attached to the PC that will be used to access QSINET. Any printer with a Windows 95 print driver is acceptable. Since this printer will be used to print management reports, QSI recommends that the printer used be either a laser printer or a dot matrix printer capable of 250 characters per second print speeds. Your printer's manual should have these statistics.
For the optimal use of QSINET, your PC should be operating under Microsoft Windows 95. Although Windows 3.1x or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 will work, we recommend Windows 95 for it's features and stability. You can order a Windows 95 upgrade from the Microsoft web site, or from your local software retailer.
An Internet Service Provider provides access to the Internet and the various services, such as electronic mail, associated with the Internet. Your ISP will provide you a modem telephone number to dial with your PC modem, which will connect your PC to their Internet server. At this point, you have complete access to the Internet, including QSINET.
QSI has formed an alliance with IBM Global Network to make them our preferred Internet Service Provider. IBM has invested significantly in the IBM Global Network to build a nationwide backbone with wider bandwidth and less traffic than on the Internet. We highly recommend the IBM Global Network for your internet connection. Based on initial testing and client feedback, use of QSINET over the IBM Global Network has demonstrated faster response times and more reliable transmissions than from other Internet Service Providers. If IBM does not offer a local connection in your area, e-mail qsinet@qsii.com and we will aid you in obtaining an ISP that provides superior connnectivity.
ISP charges are generally inexpensive, often less than $30.00 per month. Be sure to choose a provider that allows unlimited access to the Internet. Some states allow phone companies to charge businesses on a per minute basis while others only charge a flat monthly fee, regardless of usage time. Still others utilize a tiered calling system where charges are based on the number of minutes connected to any destination. Below is a list of all states and the types of phone charges implemented. Be sure to contact your local phone company to verify any information contained here.
A Web Browser is a software product that allows access to the Internet visually and interactively. Not only can your browser be used for QSINET, it also connects you to the wealth of information available on the Internet for practically limitless activities. For just about every conceivable interest, there is a dedicated home page on the World Wide Web.
QSINET utilizes the latest in technology for providing flexible solutions for your business. Due to the sophistication of QSINET, it requires the use of a robust web browser. Therefore, QSINET should be accessed with NetscapeTM Navigator Version 2.0 or 3.0, or MicrosoftTM Explorer 3.0. Download one now by clicking on the icon of your choice below. Both are free!
Netscape has different browsers for the many different PC operating systems available on the market. Be sure to select the Version 3.0 browser for Windows 95.
